瑞茗茶樓 (Rui Ming Tea House) is a fictitious late 19th century Lego Taiwanese Tea House. It took me three months to design and build. It is a place to relax, drink tea, talk politics, and listen to elders recite classical Chinese literature like 紅樓夢. One half of 瑞茗茶樓 is situated over a lake which gives patrons a scenic view overlooking lily pads, a Bonsai tree, and coy fish. Many large buildings in Taiwan at that time had fire-fighting measures available: very large pots filled with water on the building’s perimeter. Outside, you will see neatly parked a horse, rickshaws, and a sedan chair. The building is designed to be taken apart in four layers. This allows for turning on the lights and adjusting the number of minifigs (up to 50!) and the 24 teapots and 63 teacups. I designed this tea house in the BrickLink studio app; which was key to a successful large build. I did veer from the design a bit when I actually built it. The Mazu Pilgrimage of Taiwan inspired me to create this Lego build. In 2021, I was lucky to witness this yearly pilgrimage as it came through the city of Changhua. Mazu is revered as a 12th century Taoist sea goddess. Getting a glimpse of her sedan-chair during the Dajia Mazu Pilgrimage means you have been blessed. If the pilgrims allow it, you can get a double dose of blessings by bowing to Mazu on the ground as her sedan-chair passes over you. The pilgrimage actually passed by our doorway at midnight (we used a Mazu app-tracker). After Mazu has decided when the pilgrimage will take place, her followers and supporters move on-foot so her statues can be moved between the two Mazu Temples. The trek is nine days and can be up to 600km round-trip. The Dajia Mazu Pilgrimage is one of the world’s three major religious festivals. I remember seeing Mazu followers setting up their camping tents at temples in Changhua. I’m sure Mazu was well taken care of.

This is a gold rush-themed vignette that has been popular with my friends and family who have shared a common experience: Gold Fever. Some have even said it reminds them of the movie Ballad of Buster Scruggs. Whatever memory it invokes for you, this display piece has captured the imaginations of children and adults in LegoLand. This prospector might be finding some gold in this small babbling brook. Little does he know there’s a lot more where that came from. Finding a small gold pebble or flake means the gold boulder it came from can’t be too far off. I hope you enjoy it.

Xia Hai City God Temple, Taipei, Taiwan: 霞海城隍廟 Built in 1859, this temple is dedicated to the City God or Cheng Huang Ye (城隍爺). It is located in Taipei, Taiwan, Dihua Street in the Dadaocheng neighborhood. The temple houses over six hundred deities in its 152 square meters of space, resulting in the highest statue density in Taiwan. Many Taiwanese come here to pray so they can find a suitable mate. The City God is believed to protect the people and the affairs of the particular village, town or city of great dimension. #LEGO #TAIWAN

While I was visiting Taipei, this bustling scene inspired me to capture it in Lego. Luckily the world supply of lego scooters enabled me to move forward with it. The only custom parts used were the signs I made. Enjoy! #lego

The Mid-Autumn Festival (中秋節) , also called the Moon Festival or Harvest Moon Festival, is one of the most celebrated holidays in Asia. When the full moon shines brightest in late September, people give thanks for the current harvest and have family get-togethers. Offerings are made to a well-known Chang ‘e (嫦娥), known as the Moon Goddess of Immortality. Among the offerings to her were moon cakes. Making and sharing mooncakes is one of the hallmark traditions of this festival. Their round shape symbolizes completeness and reunion of families. The husband of Chang ‘e and hero: Hou Yi (后羿) is also celebrated because of his use of a bow and arrow to shoot-down nine of the ten suns; leaving only one in the sky. Everyone was grateful to him for saving their crops from the heat of ten suns. In modern times during this lunar appreciation or moon watching, families would get together in their neighborhoods and have barbecue cook-outs. In this Lego set, we have a family enjoying their BBQ and moon cakes. All the while, being watched by Chang ‘e on the moon as it moves through the sky. Let’s not forget the Moon Rabbits (月兔) who accompany Chang ‘e to the moon. It looks like a few have made it to their BBQ! This Lego set contains a family of six minifigs: Mom, Dad, Grandma, Grandpa, Son and Daughter who are all enjoying the holiday and barbecuing their favorite dishes. Notice the Lego Moon Cakes some of them are carrying.

The Parisian Corner was inspired by my recent trip to Paris. This project includes all the best features of the buildings I saw including the typical gray-colored slanted roofs, gabled-windows, vibrant red colors, green plants on balconies, ornamental masonry, and blue-colored flowers with vines weaving in and out of wrought-iron railings. The Parisian Corner is a L-shaped building that contains a cooking school, art school, dance studio, Café Opéra, pharmacy (pharmacie), and a bakery (boulangerie). This three story building has removable layers to show off each room inside.

Ground Floor:

Bustling with tourists, merchants and locals, the ground floor is the most active. Here, you’ll find the Pharmacie, Boulangerie, Café Opera, and the private entrance to the upper floors of the building. On the street, you’ll find the organ grinder I’ve seen in the Opera district of Paris. His cats are trained to walk amongst Parisians and tourists. Further down the street is a French painter showing off his talents to tourists; all the while hoping to sell some paintings. Café Opéra is a typical Parisian venue where people congregate among the crowded tables to talk business, politics and art. Often these tables take up half the sidewalk; just so people can sit and “people watch.” The Cafe continues on to another second level. The Pharmacie is conveniently marked with vibrant green colors with a green “+” plus sign that can be seen for blocks. These pharmacies are everywhere in Paris and easy to spot. The owner of the bakery next door is proud to show off their enticing food like macarons and cheese. And finally on the ground floor is the rear courtyard where you’ll find back entrances to the businesses.

Second Floor:

The Cafe’s second level contains more tables and an area for entertainment like a hired singer or comedy act. Next door, you’ll find the cooking school. Here, students will learn the fine art of French cooking. Each student has their own station that includes an oven, counter and sink.

Third Floor:

The third floor contains the dancing studio and art school. The art studio provides each student with an easel. 

The Parisian Corner can be easily connected to other Lego modular buildings by the connectors at the base. Many of its components can be borrowed and used in countless other Lego CiTY, Creator and modular creations.

If you haven’t seen a malt cookie street vendor (麥芽餅街頭攤販), then Taiwan is the place to visit. If you’re lucky to see one, you can watch them prepare the malt-filled cookies right in front of you. The cookies aren’t too sweet and are very mellow and comforting. They also make lollipops with the hardened malt (molasses). Notice the vendor uses his motorcycle to move his business around. It’s also equipped with a propane tank and burner to heat the malt.

My latest MOC of the Lego Østerlars Rundkirke was quite a challenge. It is a historic building located near the village of Østerlars on the island of Bornholm, Denmark. Built around 1160, this Romanesque church is a rundkirke (round church) and is known to be the oldest on the island. This building was used as a refuge site for Christians and is one of a few of Europe’s oldest fortified churches. The top story has a notable open shooting gallery as indicated by the holes. The round shape of the church ensures aiming at all angles. During the 16th century, a number of buttresses were added to support the outer wall. The church’s organ is quite unique with it’s Y-shape and tall pipes. This Lego set has a removable steeple to access the inside of the church. The entrance hall is removable along with a exterior wall that opens on a hinge. It’s a perfect play set for kids that want to move minifigs inside and out of the church and up the spiral staircase to the gallery. At night this building lights up with official Lego LED lights. Another added bonus is the Danish Pastry vendor that sells tasty treats to the tourists. #lego

What’s one of the best bakeries in Taiwan? Of course it’s Sunmerry (聖瑪莉)！ It’s located on the popular Yong Kong Street in Taipei, which is known for its shops and eateries that tourists enjoy. Sunmerry was part of my daily food shopping after finishing my Chinese language class. Because of its popularity, crowds often line up for their tasty baked goods. The bakery has an iconic logo: a smiling pineapple! This Lego set is a great play set for kids. The bakery can be accessed by removing the top layer. The rooftop is typical of Taipei buildings; a flat area than can be used for a garden. With some photos, I added buildings on each side of the bakery just to show how it fits into the Taipei landscape. On the front sidewalk, you’ll find a minifig keeping up a Taiwan tradition: wishing for good luck during bai bai (拜拜) by burning incense papers. At nighttime, this Lego building lights up using official Lego LED lights. Enjoy! #LEGO

In cities like Taipei and Taizhong in Taiwan, you’ll often see these vast scooter parking lots. This one is of a smaller scale, but is a perfect addition to anyone’s Lego CiTY. On this street corner, you’ll find a Malt Cake (Cookie) vendor (麥芽餅). Inside the parking lot, the attendant is not only taking payments for parking, but also sells replacement fully charged batteries for customers’ scooters. #lego

During my recent visit to the Sun Yat-Sen Memorial in Taipei, I discovered something I’ve missed before: a piece of art… a mosaic tile of the SYS Memorial. I took it a step further and created a Lego MOC of it. Hope you like it! #lego #sunyatsen #taiwan

The Japanese Restaurant was inspired by my trip to Kyoto, Japan in 2018. The building exists on Karasuma-dori St. near the main train station. Elements of architecture and elegance include Japanese style-windows, lanterns, tile roof, cherry tree, bamboo, and a wood bridge over a pond that spans the front of the building. Once inside, the patrons can choose between eating upstairs or downstairs. To order Ramen, Sushi or other dishes, they provide a ticket machine called a Otsuri. Outside in the side alley there is a typical colorful drink vending machine that you see everywhere in Japan. And of course, Japanese are famous for their cats… So this MOC has one! This building is a great play set for kids because it comes with many minifigures and comes apart in three sections: first floor, second floor and roof. It also contains Lego-brand LED lights that shine from the roof all the way to the first floor though a interior light shaft. This Lego MOC of mine was a result of an inspiration I had while traveling to Taipei, Taiwan in 2019. Frequently, in front of some mysterious shops, I would see green neon lights in the form of a burst of light. At night, they were more pronounced when seen from my hotel room 30 floors up. These shops sell the fruit (berry) of the Areca palm. Often referred to as a Betel Nut (檳榔), when chewed it provides a mild stimulant and turns your saliva red. Decades ago, men used to spit the contents on the sidewalks of cities like Taipei. The Betel Nut shops today provide a cup for people to use. How nice! They even provide a lid for your cup. That along with social convention has led to no more red spots on the streets of Taipei! While you’re visiting a Betel Nut shop, why not pick up a few lottery tickets while you’re at it?

This treasure hunt-themed vignette is a follow-on to my last year’s Lego Ideas project: The Clueless Prospector. This time, we have a treasure hunter and his dog who are looking far and wide for their treasure, but don’t realize it’s just below their feet and in front of their eyes. This treasure hunter is even using modern technology: a metal detector. Let’s hope he finds it! I created the LEGO Skypad Apartments after seeing an unusual building in Taiwan. It is modeled after a modern tower located at Da-an Park, Taipei. This 11 story building MOC is 1.16m high.

Even Lego minifigures need to do laundry. Head on down to The Right Fluff. This Lego laundromat has an assortment of washer and dryers. On top of the building is a giant washing machine with a rotating load of laundry inside. Just turn the crank in the back and watch it go. It’s the talk of the town and county! If you want the building to exist in a downtown CiTY location, the parking lot can be easily detached and it can nestled between two other modular buildings. Get ready to drive and haul cargo with an extra large Ford F-150 crew cab truck with a six foot bed! It holds up to 4 minifigures! The moveable tailgate allows for even more space to move all kinds of cargo; like rocks. Notice the tailpipe and exhaust coming from it… Gotta love those white croissant lego parts. This is a good play set for kids and for a display piece in anyone’s lego model collection.

This set is a tribute to the 1975 Disney movie: “The Apple Dumpling Gang”. Located in Quake City, California, this bank plays a major role in the film. It houses the large gold nugget found by Bobby, Clovis, and Celia Bradley: the three kids who own the Commodore Mine. No one in Quake City thought there was any gold left after the Quake of ’65 pinched off the gold veins for good. But while the kids were exploring their mine, a sudden earthquake uncovered the nugget worth $87,425 (in 1879 dollars). The kids offer their nugget to The Hash Knife Outfit (Theodore Ogelvie and Amos Tucker). But they have to break into the bank to get it. They tried using a ladder to enter the skylight. They even try pulling themselves up with a rope slung over the building and pulled by a donkey on the other end. Their “sweaty dynamite”, used to blow the bank’s safe, unexpectedly explodes and blows up the bank. Amos and Theodore remain protected inside the bank safe. The gold nugget gets destroyed too; reducing it to smaller-sized gold nuggets scattered throughout Quake City’s downtown street. The rest of the minifigures in this set represent the sheriff (Homer McCoy), banker (Leonard Sharpe), and guardian of the children: Russell Donovan and his horse.

This set has a great western theme to it; something very popular with kids and AFOLs. Situated on a 32x32 baseplate, the bank can be used in anyone’s western town, ghost town or 19th century town setting.

The Lego Gator Utility Vehicle is popular on Lego ranches and farms. The moveable dumping bucket is handy for unloading. Whether it be hauling logs, rocks, plants, trees or brush, the Gator can handle it. #lego

Here is a Lego Sedan Chair that I’m designing for another build. The sedan chair was a symbol of wealth and status in the 17th and 18th centuries. It was a comfortable and private way to travel. It was a way to move through crowded areas like city streets or markets while avoiding direct contact with people. Instructions are included here. Here is a Lego Pulled Rickshaw that I’m designing for another build. Often drawn by two people, this mode of transportation was chiefly used in Asian countries starting in the late 19th century. Even though there might be better (obscure) parts to use, (i.e. using part #87087 vs #3386) I decided to go with a design that many people can build from their own brick collection. #lego

I didn’t prefer the base of the LEGO Succulents #10309 set. So, with some floral foam, rocks, wire and real succulent pots. The lego is attached to the wire and doesn’t touch the foam. I think it’s much better. What do you think? #lego

The Hooterville Cannonball locomotive and water stop were filmed in Jamestown, California at the Railtown 1897 State Park (a must see!). In 2014, I created a stained glass minifig. It still hangs on the outside of my shed in California’s Sierra Nevada Foothills. It’s still going strong after years of sun, wind, rain, hail, snow, and temperatures from below freezing to 44 degrees C.

The Cone of Silence was popularized in the 1960s comedy TV show: “Get Smart.” Invented by Professor Cone, it is designed to keep communications between two people private and secure; much like today’s secret government SCIF (Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility) rooms and buildings. In the TV show, Maxwell Smart insists on activating the Cone of Silence during a Magenta Alert when Class A Security matters are discussed. The Cone of Silence worked too well. It actually shuts off communication entirely. Agent Smart and the Chief never hear each other and usually shout out “What?” or “How’s That?” The Chief asks him why he insists on using it. Agent Smart replies: “For one thing, it’s 20 degrees cooler inside.” The first time The Cone of Silence appears in the show, the characters actually say “Funny, doesn’t look it!” This Lego version of the Cone is a great play set for kids as they can move the Cone vertically, and swivel it horizontally to reveal or remove it from the room. It also makes an excellent vignette display piece. Included in this Lego set is also a minifig for Agent 99; dressed in red. To activate the Cone of Silence, the Chief uses the red button on his desk. It can also be operated by Hodgkins nearby. When asked to raise the Cone, Hodgkins replies: “What?”

A perfect addition to your Lego CiTY: a pocket park on a Lego 16x16 plate. I was inspired to make this from the many pocket parks I’ve seen in Taipei neighborhoods. For your Lego buildings, here’s a trick I learned when I wanted a staggered tile pattern on a vertical plate. I use this method when designing some of my modular buildings modeled after ones in Taiwan. Instructions are included. Start with this 4x12 plate example and expand or reduce to your liking. This is my MOC of the 1959 Plymouth Belvedere Taxi… a revised version of the one I made in 2016. It is large enough to fit 4 minifigs! This model shows off the classic fins and very large hoods and trunks seen in cars of that day. The Belvedere was used in the 1963 movie: “It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad, World.” I hope you enjoy it! #lego #taxi

Just in time for the new movie with Tom Hanks: “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” this Lego set commemorates the popular children’s TV show “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” (1968). Not only is it a model of Mister Rogers’ house, but it’s also a complete TV studio set as well. Included in this set are minifigures representing some characters from the show: Fred Rogers, Mr. McFeely, and Officer Clemmons. Four more minifigures make up the studio crew. The Neighborhood Trolley is the central figure in this set as seen on the small trolley tracks that enter and depart his living room. Famous props in this show are created with Lego as well: traffic light, picture-picture, fish tank, and porch swing. The Parisian Corner was inspired by my recent trip to Paris. The original model (Parisian Corner XL) exceeded the 3,000 piece limit for LegoIdeas. So, I’m trying again with this one at 2,821 pieces on a 32x32 baseplate. This building includes all the best features of the buildings I saw including the typical gray-colored slanted roofs, gabled-windows, vibrant red colors, green plants on balconies, ornamental masonry, and blue-colored flowers with vines weaving in and out of wrought-iron railings. The Parisian Corner is a L-shaped building that contains a cooking school, art studio, dance school, Café Opéra, pharmacy (pharmacie), and a bakery (boulangerie). This three story building has removable layers to show off each room inside. This is the second version of this model I have submitted on Lego Ideas. Bustling with tourists, merchants and locals, the ground floor is the most active. Here, you’ll find the Pharmacie, Boulangerie, Café Opera, and the private entrance to the upper floors of the building. On the street, you’ll find the organ grinder I’ve seen in the Opera district of Paris. His cats are trained to walk amongst Parisians and tourists. Further down the street is a French painter showing off his talents to tourists; all the while hoping to sell some paintings. Café Opéra is a typical Parisian venue where people congregate among the crowded tables to talk business, politics and art. Often these tables take up half the sidewalk; just so people can sit and “people watch.” The Pharmacie is conveniently marked with vibrant green colors with a green “+” plus sign that can be seen for blocks. These pharmacies are everywhere in Paris and easy to spot. The owner of the bakery next door is proud to show off their enticing food like macarons and cheese. Notice the oven door that opens and closes allowing a baking tray to be inserted and removed.

The second floor contains a cooking school where students will learn the fine art of French cooking. The third floor contains the dancing school and art studio. Each floor has access to a fire escape in the rear of the building.

The Parisian Corner can be easily connected to other Lego modular buildings by the connectors at the base. It goes great with Lego’s Parisian Restaurant #10243. Children will love it because of its playability. Many of its components can be borrowed and used in countless other Lego CiTY, Creator and modular creations.

My newest Lego MOC is the Danish Woven Heart (julehjerte). Normally made out of paper, this decoration can be found on many Danish Christmas trees. It’s time to celebrate a famous TV detective: Columbo (portrayed by Peter Falk) in BrickHeadz form. Lieutenant Columbo was well known for solving mysteries on TV in the 1970’s through the 2000’s. His demeanor was always predictable. His iconic look included a wrinkled-up raincoat, green tie, wild hair, and asymmetric facial expression. When interrogating people, he would often annoy them with his questions. He would respond: “I’m terribly sorry.” or “I apologize.” He would also frequently say: “Sorry for intruding. I hope you don’t mind.” or “I hate to bother you, but…” Just as Columbo is about to solve the case, he would often turn and say: “Oh, one more thing…” as he’s leaving the room. Now you know he’s onto someone! Columbo can be displayed on your desk or on a shelf of your collection of Brickheadz.

Swiss Villa 2.0 Reboot

Lego needs to bring back the hugely popular set from 1973: The Swiss Villa (#540). This time, it would be minifig-scale to add to the playability of the set and it can be easily added to anyone’s Lego CiTY landscape. The proposal here still includes recognizable items from the old set: iconic TV antenna, white diagonal patterned railings, blue arches, and distinctive red and blue colors. Added features include the lovable Lederhosen Guy minifig and his car, a wood stove, bedroom, more detailed front yard, and barbecue. Since it would be today’s modern Swiss Villa, why not include a solar panel? The Swiss Villa 2.0 reboot would be an excellent play set for kids again like it was in 1973. When I was age 7, my mother bought three of them for my two brothers and me. Practically every kid in the neighborhood had one too. Most AFOLs see the Swiss Villa Lego set as a piece of art.

With out a grader, you couldn’t build or maintain a road. Here is a 1972 model Galion 503 Series A Grader designed for flattening surfaces, digging drainage ditches and building roads before rock or pavement is put down. This minifig-scale model sports a covered roof for extra cabin protection from a rollover or from swinging branches or debris. This MOC has three axles. The front axle has a movable axle to steer the vehicle. The center blade that performs the grading moves in 3 ways: horizontal, rotational, and pivotal. The iconic part of any grader’s blade is the “turn table.” Notice this MOC’s gray-colored turn table. The two minifigs in this model each have a walkie talkie for communication. When it’s too noisy, they use hand signals to communicate. This tractor has been customized by adding a toolbox on the front. You never know when you need tools while you’re working out in the middle of nowhere!

Dozing! And not the sleepy kind! This yellow behemoth is any operator’s dream bulldozer. Here, we have Danny and his land clearing business. He removes brush, stumps, and dead trees on your property to reduce fire danger and to improve the land’s grazing productivity. His specialties include pond building, landscaping and road building. If you have bats, he’s good at getting rid of them too. As Danny does his work, the owl nearby patiently waits for the snake that has come out of the ground. Danny can work in comfort with his “cab” that is air conditioned, heated, and comes equipped with a stereo system. He will often climb on top of the cab with his binoculars to scout out the landscape. Brush and chaparral are often tall and view obstructing. The job goes quicker when Danny doesn’t have to get off the dozer to assist the workers on the ground. So, he and his workers use a set of hand signals to communicate. “Working The Chain” is an exhausting effort when moving and lifting large rocks or objects over long distances with the dozer’s shovel; all done without dragging or pushing them. When maneuvering around trees, the dozer’s cab has a steel cage on the rear that protects Danny from flying tree branches. After a long day in the sun, Danny relaxes with his dog Harper over a fast-food meal from the local Mini Mart. At the end of this project, Danny and his workers need to transport the Dozer to another site. The dozer’s rough tracks will surely break up the paved road or driveway nearby. To cross over a paved road, the dozer drives on top of rubber tires placed under the tracks. As the dozer pulls forward, tires are moved from the back to the front in a round-robin style until the dozer reaches the transport trailer. This is a great play set for kids as it comes with 3 minifigs, a dog, owl, snake, and lots of accessories: fire extinguisher, binoculars, food, shovel, sledge hammer, 2 sets of chains, fedora hat, helmet & earmuffs, road cones, weed trimmer, blow torch, scenery pieces, boulders: all to be used in many combinations. The Dozer also has a removable hood to show it’s powerful engine.

My 100th Lego MOC! This is our 1973 Hyster Wheel Roller esi56 we have on the ranch. It is similar to a drum roller, but instead uses rows of wheels. It’s very useful for building roads and flattening dirt. Here, it carries a large, heavy cargo of pea-gravel in the rear to maximize the flattening of the material on the ground. It also has the ability to make sharp turns. Since the roller needs to go back and forth repeatedly, it provides two seats for the operator to use. The Hyster Roller’s companion on the job site is often a water truck. Enjoy! #lego #roller #hyster #heavy-equipment

How do you fight traffic in LegoLand? Take to the skies with a helicopter used for commuting to work. This Lego set comes with a minifig pilot dressed in his working suit. Behind the pilot seat in this helicopter is a compartment to hold his briefcase. This realistic ‘copter has bricks that simulate navigation and landing lights: red and green navigation on the front, landing light on the front, strobe light on the back and tail, and a red beacon light on the top of the tail. The moving parts for this set will capture the imagination of kids. The ‘copter’s main blade and tail rotor rotate like a real helicopter. A windshield that raises and lowers enables a minifig to be easily loaded up. Every Lego CiTY needs one more of these so make their inhabitants happy.

Yes, in the countryside you’ll find strip malls! They may not sell designer goods like urban malls do, but they have a charm of their own. This one has six businesses: a barber shop, The Donut Hole, Flo’s Cafe, Laundromat, Bait & Tackle, and 5 & dime. The roof of the mall is removable so the inside of each shop can be organized. The barber shop comes complete with a barber’s chair, mirror and sitting area. The donut shop was inspired by a place seen in the small town of Escalon, California where you can find a crowd of male senior citizens in the morning sitting inside and outside as they discuss events of the day. Even country-folk enjoy eating out. Flo’s diner will cater to your appetite. The laundromat next door comes with five wall mounted washers and driers, laundry soap dispenser and folding table. A country-side strip mall is incomplete without a Bait & Tackle shop for fishing gear and a “5 & Dime” store for the low-cost incidentals. This lego set comes with 12 minifigures: Two of which are seen in the parking lot warming themselves next to a burn barrel. Even the chickens get cold high in the countryside! This mall is an older one because it still has a public telephone. Next to it is their community public mailbox.

This is a great play set for kids. To help with the fun, there’s a pickup truck, motorcycle, ATV, Scropion, Skunk, two dogs, and two chickens. At night-time the strip mall comes alive with official Lego LED lights for each store.

Vikings in Denmark? They have made their presence known here on Nyhvan (New Harbor), Copenhagen, Denmark. Along this 17th-century waterfront, canal and entertainment district, the Vikings here enjoy their shore leave by relaxing and eating turkey legs and fish (while always having their weapons at the ready). They also have a chance to count their treasure in the bags, trunks and barrels before their next embarkment. The oldest home on Nyhavn was built in 1681. This lego set displays a sample of these nostalgic, brightly colored 17th and 18th entry townhouses, cafes and restaurants. Hans Christian Andersen was a resident here for 18 years. In this set, we have a bakery, storehouse, dining hall, treasure room, gold merchant, and turkey leg repository. The canal harbors many historical wooden ships; in this case… Viking ships! One special feature in this lego set is a “Romeo & Juliet” scene: a Viking marriage proposal with a ring.

This lego set is a great play set for kids as it has 21 Viking minifigs, treasure pieces, gold, and 2 viking boats. It contains 2888 pieces. This set will likely convert Lego enthusiasts into becoming Lego Viking fans.

Please support my project on Lego ideas: here  This house was built by my grandfather in the Noe Valley neighborhood of San Francisco in 1947.  I created the modular version of it with Lego as a tribute to my grandparents. This three bedroom house is a typical “row house” which has a narrow facade, yet a deep footprint that includes a back yard. Note the access to the back yard is through the garage and the rear of the building. The three removable layers of this Lego set shows the unique architecture needed for buildings of this style. For example, the front door is in the middle of the building and on the second floor. Guests would press the “buzzer” so the resident can remotely unlock the front gate. The decor of this building is shown how it looked in 1977 when it was sold.

The walk up to the front door has a unique skylight that brings in daylight to give the illusion of being outside. Most row houses in San Francisco also have “light wells.” These are shafts in the middle for side of the building to let light inside from a otherwise dark part of the building. As you can see, the neighboring buildings join right up to both sides of this house. Most of these homes in SF had flat roofs like this one. The front facade would have a decorative fake roof; giving the appearance of a sloped roof on the entire building.

The dining room shows the Danish dishes my grandmother would prepare; mostly fish like herring. After dinner, guests would retire to the living room to enjoy the corner fireplace or at Christmas time, the tree my grandmother would have in the window.

The 2-car garage has a door that opens and closes. This set comes with two minifig scale automobiles that fit nicely in the garage. Behind the garage you’ll find a party room, laundry room and half bathroom. 

The back doors open into the garden of fruit trees, flowers and a bird bath. My grandfather (one of the minifigs in this set) used to work in the garden shoveling dirt while wearing his suit and tie. My grandmother (the other minifig) would be nearby to help with the chores. Like most San Franciscans in the 1950s, they hung their laundry out on the clothes line to dry. This house’s clothes line is operated from the back porch.

This set is an excellent play set for kids as it comes with two minifigs, two cars, furniture, LED lights, and flexibility to be included in any Lego downtown CiTY.

This MOC shows even in LegoLand, there are ranchers with Lego trucks and trailers to keep the ranch in order. #lego

In the sleepy town of Stars Hollow, you’ll find Luke Danes of the TV show Gilmore Girls. Luke owns the local diner and drives a dark green Chevy Custom Camper truck. Luke uses this truck to help local residents fix their homes and will often lend a hand moving their “stuff.” On the hood and roof of Luke’s truck, you’ll see his signature worn and peeling paint with exposure to the under layers. His truck also features a tailgate that goes up and down. Included with the truck is a minifigure representation of Luke himself… with his stubbly beard, backwards baseball cap, plaid blue shirt, and fishing gear.

This project would go well with any Gilmore Girls Lego set like Luke’s Diner, etc. The minifig and truck can also double as a good country fisherman character.

The Big Red Barn is an iconic image of Western farming. Centuries ago, European farmers sealed their barns with a combination of linseed oil and rust. The rust was poison to fungi, mold and moss. The color actually started out more of a “burnt-orange” and became more “red” in the late 1800s when paints were produced with chemical pigments. Red was the most inexpensive color! Red Barns became fashionable and indicated wealth. Here we have Farmer Fred and his animals. His barn stores the hay and houses the animals from the weather. The tractor is used to transport the alfalfa hay bales around the farm. At the top of his barn, the pulley is used to move hay into the loft through the gable door. The back of the barn has a sliding door so farm vehicles can be stored inside. Farmer Fred has his work cut out for him as you can see. Raising animals takes work! The Big Red Barn is a great subject for Lego because of the colors and easy to build rectangular building on a simple 16x16 plate. The minifig (Fred), animals and tractor make it a great play set for kids.

When I wanted to decorate my desktop with MORE Lego, this idea came to me when I was recharging my smart phone. Should the phone recharge while taking up desk space? To get the phone out of the way, I built a lego charging stand for it. The charging cable hooks up to my desktop computer so the house sits right next to my Lego Pencil Box. The two sets go great together. The minifigure adds the finishing touch.

If you have a smart phone, why not make it fun by having it appear to be part of a lego set? I can see these popping up all over on people’s desktops.

When I wanted to decorate my desktop with MORE Lego, this idea came to me when I was recharging my smart watch. Should the watch recharge while lying flat? Or coiled up? None of those looked visually appealing on the desk until I built a lego stand for it. Why not build-in the charging stand too? Smart watch chargers these days are magnetic, so it will just “grab” the watch when you place it on top of the house. No snapping or pushing it into a connector. The charging cable hooks up to my desktop computer so the house sits right next to my Lego Pencil Box. The two sets go great together. The minifigure and her loyal cat (camouflaged on top of the roof) are residents of this quaint Grandma-styled house. At night, the house windows can light up with official Lego LEDs. Note the small hole in the back that provides access to the green button that activates the battery pack.

If you have a smart watch, why not make it fun by having it appear to be part of a lego set? I can see these popping up all over on people’s desktops.

This vignette is a tribute to the 1932 short comedy film “The Music Box” starring Laurel & Hardy (Stan Laurel & Oliver Hardy). In this MGM film, Stan and Ollie operate a delivery company. Their motto: “Tall Oaks From Little Acorns Grow”. It’s their job to deliver a piano to the house at the top of the hill. Or in the film they call it: “The house on top of the stoop.” They see the long stretch of easement steps (The Music Box Steps) that go up to this house. This vignette shows the first portion of those stairs as the hike is very long. Stan and Ollie don’t notice the actual road to that house. So, they decide to lug the piano up all those stairs. The piano gets away from them and rolls down the stairs over and over. The piano is the central character in this film. The piano moves by itself, makes all kinds of piano loud sounds as they carry it, it falls on Ollie’s back, falls into a pond, rolls down the steps 4 times, and experiences a tragic ending. As they push the piano up the stairs, they shout out “Heave-Ho! Heave-Ho!” This is a cry emitted when doing actions in unison that take physical effort. The minifigs in his set include Stan and Ollie, the nursemaid (who is blocked from using the steps), Professor Theodore von Schwartzenhoffen (also blocked from using the steps), the mailman (points out the road they could have used), the policeman (responding to their ruckus), and Susie the horse.

This lego set shows off the use of Terra-Cotta style roofs seen on many California homes. It makes an excellent play set for kids as it comes with a wagon, horse, baby carriage, and six minifigs. It also makes a good display piece and conversation starter.

Welcome to the off-grid mountain cabin! This humble abode has all the amenities that make it truly an off-grid experience. Self-sufficiency is the key theme for this Lego set: a theme in which kids can learn. To be self sufficient, a number of features are a must. A fruit orchard and organic vegetable garden provide sustenance. Scattered throughout the cabin’s yard are a variety of other fruit trees. All this requires a lot of water! For its water system, it has a 400 foot well, solar-powered pump, and a 2500 gallon water tank. The cabin’s gutters also capture rain water in a rain barrel; used mostly for the garden and trees. The cabin comes to life at night with brilliant LED lights. To power these lights and appliances in the house, a solar panel system and windmill are used to charge the batteries. No battery power left? No problem. A bio-diesel generator will kick in!

The biggest problem this household has is predators; particularly bears. To protect the inside of the cabin, wood shields for the windows and doors are used. And spikes for each doorstep… Note how the bear stops on the steps in front of the spikes and won’t continue on his rampage. In addition to bears, coyotes can threaten their chickens and pets. The dog house just isn’t enough to product their dogs. The kitty cat (notice no rodents) takes refuge under the house or on the roof. The pets know all to well to keep away from the scorpions. What a sting!

There is no TV for this cabin! Who needs a TV in the countryside? There’s too much to do. It does, however, contain a satellite dish for Internet connectivity. Also with a Ham radio and scanner, one can communicate with the outside world for fire notification and neighborhood watch. At night under a blanket of stars, a telescope provides hours of night viewing. While doing that, others can enjoy the patio furniture and BBQ. 

A true off-grid cabin doesn’t have a physical mailing address. This is because the post man doesn’t come out this far. Notice the missing mailbox… For correspondence, a post office box is used in a nearby town. Also, off-grid means no city sewer! An outhouse will do; just as humans have been using for thousands of years. Only this one has a flushing toilet made possible by a gravity-fed water tank specially devoted to “the water closet.”

Anyone living off-grid needs to be handy. Stuff happens. Chores like putting up barbed wire and making repairs are all part of the experience. The Off-Grid Cabin comes equipped with a full-on set of tools with a choice toolbox.

The Off-Grid Cabin is a great Lego play set because all the steel roofs are removable to show the contents inside: a bedroom, kitchen, living room and dining room. A refrigerator? Yes! …powered by propane. Notice the tank just outside next to the cabin’s wood pile. Other accessories will be popular with kids like the Bio-Diesel Ford F150 pickup truck, tools, chainsaw, motorcycle, minifigure, three dogs, and one cat.

Meet Brad The Broker. Brad is so hard working because he comes in at 5am each day. Here is his desk. He puts his briefcase down, grabs his note pad and is ready for his first clients of the day. 

No broker’s desk is real without the iconic gold and green Banker’s Desk Lamp, computer monitors, multiple world-wide clocks, crawling stock ticker, and a whiteboard to help him strategize. He protects the cash and gold his clients give him with a strong and sturdy safe located behind him. There’s so much cash and gold bars, that he has to stack it on top of the safe while some cash falls to the floor.

Brad needs all the luck he can get when investing. So, he has his crystal ball to predict the future and a Magic Eight Ball to help with difficult decisions. Brad even has a dart board where darts land on “buy, hold and sell.” He has a fondness for Chinese Lucky Bamboo; as it can bring good fortune to his desk. Behind Brad you’ll see his most prized good luck charm: an antique stock ticker tape machine. As you can see, Brad isn’t afraid to show off his collection of finance tools; even when clients come.

After a long day when Brad needs a late afternoon jolt of energy, he enjoys his Buzz Cola.

This makes a great Lego display piece on a standard 16x16 plate. Surprisingly, I was able to find actual lego pieces to create the needed desk items. Kids will love it because of the mini figures and unique items.

Protect your food! …or the bears will get it. A guaranteed way to protect your food “cache” is storing it up high in a Bear Cache. These are popular with homesteaders, off-grid ranchers and hunters to store food and their wild game meat. These caches should be built 100 meters from a campsite or homestead and preferably down-wind. You will find some very elaborate and some very rustic in areas like Alaska. Most of them were made of logs; which gives them the “log cabin look.” This set will be popular because it uses Lego pieces that can be easily used again in other creations. And yes, the bear is an official Lego piece #13866. The Bear Cache can be a great companion to Lego sets like The Lakeside Lodge #31048, Mountain Hut #31025, Robber’s Hideout #4438, and Forest Police Station #4440.

This is a tribute Lego model to the “Capital I” classic Sesame Street cartoon and song. The epic song is by the great Steve Zuckerman from the show's third season (1971-1972). The cartoon shows three characters who live inside a giant Capital I situated in the middle of the desert. They continually do their daily chores as the song describes. If you ask me, these three characters might be the inspiration for the creation of the keebler elves or the smurfs. If you want to see the “Capital I” cartoon and hear the lyrics, search for “Capital I” in YouTube and you can sing along to the song; a song I remember from my childhood. This model is a great inspiration to kids learning their ABCs; perhaps encouraging them to make models of other characters in the alphabet.

On my latest trip to Paris, I met an organ grinder and his two cats. His way to gather crowds are showing off his cats and playing music. Both cats are well trained to be at-ease with the bustling noises of the Opera district. His cats will even hop down and walk amongst the tourists and Parisian natives. Each day, I visited him and his cats to show my support. I decided to make a Lego creation of him as a tribute to my fun trip in France. The Parisian Organ Grinder can be used on the street in any Lego City or Creator set and in anyone’s downtown collection of modular buildings.

Fromage! The Cheese Van was inspired by my latest trip to Paris. The traffic was so heavy there, that these delivery vans had to use skill and patience. Meet Calvino of Calvino’s Cheese Delivery. Calvino provides the best Italian cheeses to his Paris neighborhood. He delivers so much cheese that he needs a dolly (hand cart) to move his product around. Calvino is well dressed as his minifig shows. He has to keep up appearances for his customers! His shiny white van is his pride and joy. It’s sealed up so well that passers by won’t even get a whiff of his stinky Talegio, Limburger or Munster cheeses.

The Cheese Van set uses common bricks that can be used over and over in other sets. It also contains popular white-colored bricks which can easily be used to create other types of vehicles like trucks or sedans. The Cheese Van can go well with any of the Lego City or Creator sets and with anyone’s collection of city of modular buildings. What neighborhood doesn’t need a cheese van?

Have you seen one of these driving around town? Bundt Cakes! Ready for a “Bundt Coma?” The Bundt Mobile will come out of nowhere and deliver bundt cakes of all sizes to you: Bundts, Bundt-lets, and Bundt-tini’s. The van is supposed to be “over the top” to advertise the bakery. It comes equipped with a rear transparent window that opens up for quick access to the bundts and also to show them off to cars on the road. The passenger and driver doors open and close or can also be removed entirely for quick in-and-out access on busy days.

The Bundt Mobile is a great play set for kids and can be used with other Lego CiTY and Creator Sets. Why not add a Bundt Mobile to your CiTY and downtown?  It can hold up to two minifigs: one driver and the other in the back. A few accessories include a dolly (hand truck), 2 bundt platters and bundt cakes galore!

The Water Closet, or commonly known as an Outhouse, is (or was) one of the most recognizable symbols in society. It was also known as a Privy, Powder Room, Sand Box, Throne, “Little House Behind The House”, or simply: The Closet. I have one of these at my off-grid ranch. Like the picture, its flushing toilet makes use of water that is gravity-fed by an outside water tank. What’s needed outside the Water Closet? Flowers!  And lots of them to keep the smell down. The Water Closet also tends to attract other creatures. Note the spider carrying off a mouse. This is a tribute to the Australian Huntsman Spider which recently starred in a video that went viral on The Internet.

I thought this would make a nice Lego set because all the parts can be easily obtained and re-used in other Lego sets. The base is a standard 16x16 plate. Kids will love it because… c’mon… they’re kids. How can they not like the subject of this set?

This is my 1989 Ford F-150 pickup truck. I enjoy the “boxy” look of the Ford trucks in the 1980s, so I decided to build one in Lego. This blue and white truck goes anywhere off road to race or simply to go off-grid to go camping. The removable camper shell makes room for transporting a motorcycle and other cargo. Notice the movable tailgate and camper shell window. The camper shell is also removable!

The minifigs in this set are the Ford enthusiast and his trusty dog companion. My friends and I used to take our motorcycles in the back of our trucks to the various motorcycle parks in Northern California.

This Ford model looks great in my Lego display cabinet along with my favorite Lego trucks. This set would be a “must have” for truck enthusiasts of all ages.

“Fore!”  When playing golf, you yell out this word as you tee-off. The “Fore-Caddy” up ahead hears this and attempts to help locate where the golf ball lands. Here we have a Golf Cart Lego set that can be enjoyed by kids as a play set and for Golf aficionados as a simple display piece. The cart actually holds two minifigs and their golf bag in back with various golf clubs including drivers, woods and putters. The scene here depicts a fairway, rough, putting green, flag, and some golf balls that are ready to be sunk into the cup.

Four wheel drive competition is the game! Here we have seven identical 4x4 racing trucks; each with a color coordinated minifig racer. The driver will use his or her skills at cross-country, back road racing and survival with limited provisions. For longer races, the hitch on the back of each truck can be used to pull a trailer. Each driver’s truck hood has a insignia (pictograph) that represents their team. The insignias are Chinese characters for team colors:  orange 橙,  red 紅,  yellow 黃,  white 白,  black 黑,  gray 灰,  blue 藍

Kids will love this set for the colors and number of vehicles to construct. The seven minifigs; unlike any ever seen in a Lego set, will attract attention if the Spectrum Racers are used as a display piece. And kids can expand their knowledge of the world by having a chance to learn a few ‘color’ Chinese characters as they are playing with this set.

Manny The Moonshiner lives deep in the mountains of Appalachia. He’s a shiner from way back; almost a legend in those parts. Manny makes moonshine at his hidden “secure still site.” A “still site” requires running water. Thus, the term “Branch Water” for moonshine liquor was coined. Behind Manny, you’ll see his sacks of corn used to make his mash. To protect himself and his pile of money from thieves, he packs heat: a 9mm handgun. Manny has anxious customers waiting. Notice his “haul” of moonshine-filled mason jars ready for delivery. Because moonshining is illegal, Manny has to do his work under the dark of night and with the light of the moon (moonshiner!) to help him get around.
